An Auckland woman dealing with the loss of her twin sister in a fatal car crash also faces having to pay for the funeral herself.

Sophie Langston, 28, died when the car she was in with her partner, Simon Thomas, crashed just south of Turangi about 1pm on Tuesday. The pair were returning to Auckland.

It is understood that the car Langston and Thomas were travelling in collided with another vehicle as one attempted to turn right from the highway into a driveway.

An appeal has been set up to help her sister Laura with the funeral costs, as she has no immediate family to help with expenses.

Laura Langston's friend Chris Harper, has set up a Givealittle page, along with Thomas' brother Christopher.

At 7.30am on Thursday, the page had already raised more than $23,000.

Harper has posted a tribute to Laura on his Facebook page.

"Sophie leaves behind so many friends and family that are dealing with a huge amount of hurt, pain and the unexpected funeral costs that are associated with the passing of a 28 year old, especially since both her parents are not here to help contribute towards the costs," Harper said in a Facebook post.

"I'm personally still in shock over this (not sure why I'm even at work). I shared so many good times with this girl including spending last weekend in Ohakune.

"Sophie you leave behind so much and had so much to live for! My thoughts are with both you and Simon."

In 2012 Sophie and Laura went on the tv show Missing Pieces to try and track down their father.

It turned out he had passed away, but the girls discovered they had an older half-sister, Nicky Sikora.

The three women formed a close bond after meeting.

On June 29 Sophie posted a picture of herself with Sikora on Facebook saying, "Love my sister, such a beautiful soul".

The car crash happened as Langston was returning home to Auckland from the funeral of Sikora's mother.
