The two people killed in a Cass County crash Tuesday have been identified as 22-year-old Jeremiah Ferguson of Omaha and 21-year-old Kelsey Leclaire of Council Bluffs.

Sheriff William Brueggemann told WOWT 6 News the car going west on Young Road missed a stop sign and hit an embankment, which caused it to go over a fence and land on its top in a bean field west of Highway 75. Brueggemann said speed was a factor in the accident. Both victims were wearing seat belts.

Chief Deputy Brad Lahm told WOWT 6 News, "We believe that the car was actually airborne when it got to the other side of the road to the crest to the hill because there's no marks on the hill and it vaulted to where you first see the dirt disturbed."

The investigation indicated the accident occurred prior to 6 a.m., but wasn't discovered until 4:45 p.m. The vehicle was not visible from the highway. Sheriff Brueggemann said a local lawn care service noticed tracks and debris and found the vehicle in the field.

"We had several people tell us that they had seen the marks there and they noticed the fence was intact, so they didn't really think too much of it," said Chief Deputy Lahm.

A vigil will be held for Leclaire outside Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs at 8 p.m. Thursday.
