Steelton police are investigating an incident involving a body found Tuesday on a set of parallel stairs running between North Second and North Third streets.

Police were called to the scene around 4 p.m., according to Dauphin County emergency dispatchers, and Steelton Mayor Tom Acri said police were called to investigate an "incident."

Acri told PennLive that he could not comment on any other details.

Neighbors, who refused to provide their names, told PennLive that a neighbor woman saw a man on the phone on the Locust Street steps and later returned to see his body bleeding profusely on the steps.

They said the man, who was in his early 20s, appeared to have a single gunshot wound to the head, and they theorized that the incident was a suicide.

Investigators said they were not prepared to give a statement on whether the incident included a suicide, homicide or accident.

Media were reporting that a coroner arrived on the scene and removed the body.

Fire crews cleaned any remaining blood from the steps once the body was removed, and the steps remained visibly wet when people were allowed to make their way through the area.

Lower Swatara Township police assisted at the scene, and police refused to provide any other details related to the incident.

Steelton police said they would not provide any additional information related to the investigation before Wednesday.
