A man has been charged with murder in connection to the daylight shooting of Sydney bodybuilder Hedi Ayoub.

Mr Ayoub, 22, was found with a gunshot wound and slumped under a tree in a Punchbowl park on a Monday afternoon in late June.

He died on the grass not far from a children's playground.

Homicide squad detectives arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the suspected gangland shooting on Wednesday at a home in Renown Street, Wiley Park.

The man was taken to Campsie Police Station where he has since been charged with murder.

Police said the man had been refused bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on Thursday.

It is understood the homicide squad was executing a search warrant on Wednesday night following the arrest.

At the time of the shooting investigators suspected several people were involved in the shooting.

The hunt for those responsible led to a raid on a Wiley Park home the following day where more than two dozen heavily armed police officers stormed the Renown Street home on Tuesday afternoon.

It is not known whether further arrests will follow.
Detectives believed Mr Ayoub and his attackers met at the suburban park for a reason, but they have not revealed any possible motive.

The bodybuilder was known to police, particularly for the people he associated with, investigators say.

But Mr Ayoub's friends said the Greenacre local tried to keep clear of the "bad apples" in the bodybuilding industry, making his shooting murder all the more difficult to fathom.

Mr Ayoub was a well-known, "friendly" figure in his western Sydney suburb of Greenacre and was always up for a chat at his body supplement business, a friend said.

"Sometimes we would talk about things we believed were right and wrong in the industry and sometimes just about local people," the friend said.

He said Mr Ayoub never mixed with the wrong crowd and surrounded himself with good friends and family.
Hussein Rustom, who lived across from the park where Mr Ayoub was killed, said he heard three to five gunshots.
"We went to the park up there and found him … we were talking to him and we ask him, 'Are you all right?', and he was shaking his head."
