An Oakdale man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, who was found dead Wednesday at her home in Brooklyn Park.

The Hennepin County attorney's office said Toby Nicholas Clarke, 37, has a history of domestic abuse charges and an order for protection filed against him. Clarke called 911 at about 3 a.m. Wednesday to report that his girlfriend, Krista Ambers, 36, was unconscious, according to the criminal complaint filed Friday.

Ambers, who had noticeable marks around her neck and arms and a bite mark on an upper arm, was later pronounced dead of strangulation, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner.

Clarke told police the two were friends, but later admitted they had dated for three years and that he choked her while they were having rough sex, according to the complaint. Ambers' friends and family told police he was repeatedly abusive to her and they often saw her with marks around her neck.

Clark was convicted of felony kidnapping in 2001, providing false information to police in 2006 and a felony drug crime in 2013. He has had several domestic violence charges against him dismissed.

He will make his first appearance in Hennepin County District Court on Monday. Second-degree intentional non-premeditated murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
