A hang glider who died Sunday afternoon when he slammed into a hill at San Francisco's Fort Funston was identified Monday as a 69-year-old city resident, authorities said.
Rafael Lavin was hang gliding at the popular site in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area south of the San Francisco Zoo when he slammed into the hill around 3:50 p.m., according to the city medical examiner and firefighters.
It was not immediately clear why Lavin crashed, but witnesses said he did not steer away from the hill, firefighters said.
Fort Funston, a former military reservation along the western edge of the city with 200-foot bluffs, is one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country, according to the National Park Service.
