A 2013 Laurens Central School graduate died Friday following a motorcyle accident, officials said Sunday.
Eric Ericson, 20, of Laurens, was driving north on state Route 205, near Blood Mills Road in Laurens, at about 9:30 p.m. when the one-vehicle accident occurred, state police at Oneonta said.
Police said Ericson was going too fast and lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to go off the road and strike a fixed object.
Ericson was ejected from the motorcycle. Information was not available from state police on Sunday about the nature of Ericson's injuries, but troopers said he was wearing a helmet.
Ericson was transported by ambulance to A. O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, where he was later pronounced dead. The investigation is continuing, troopers said, but a state police spokesman did not have details about what that investigation would entail.
Otsego County Coroner James Hurley said Sunday evening that Ericson died of extensive internal injuries from the accident. Neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor, he said.
"It is very tragic," Laurens Central Superintendent Romona Wenck said Sunday afternoon, adding, "It's still hard to believe."
Wenck described Ericson as "a really, really nice young man. He was incredibly well liked by his peers."
Ericson was a student at the State University College at Plattsburgh, and was scheduled to leave for school on Saturday, she said.
