An 18-year-old Torrington resident is under arrest after being accused of killing his own mother.

The body of 49-year-old Wendy Hulme was found inside a multi-family home on Forest Street on Thursday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Friday that the cause of death for Wendy Hulme was neck compression and the manner of death was homicide.

Her son, Nicholas Hulme, was initially a person of interest in the case. He was found 80 miles away in Sleepy Hollow, NY, and taken into custody by police there. He is being held as a fugitive from justice.

Police said he stole his mother's car to get there. He was found alone.

"We had information to believe he was out that way," said Sgt. Linas Venclauskas of the Torrington Police Department. "He had a reason."

Torrington police have a warrant charging him with murder and third-degree larceny. They said he will be extradited back to Connecticut at a later date. They said that could take up to a week.

"It's disturbing that type of thing goes on, but luckily we were able to resolve it pretty quickly," Venclauskas said. "Unfortunately, there's still the aftermath of it."

It all began after a concerned relative had not seen either of them, so emergency crews were called.

"I said to myself something just didn't seem right," said Ed Guerrini, who added he can't believe his good friend is gone.

On Monday, Guerrini told Eyewitness News he received a text that stated Wendy Hulme was trying to get her son into rehab and would message him later. He never heard from Wendy Hulme again.

"She felt like her son was going to hit her or whatever," said Guerrini and added that she was afraid of him.

Guerrini said Nicholas Hulme was verbally and physically abusive to his mom.

"Some of the words he used to talk about her in this house I told him to not speak that way about his mother," Guerrini said.

Wendy and Nicholas Hulme lived on the third floor of the home. Police were called to the house a couple times in the last two years.

"It wasn't pretty," neighbor John Mitchell said about the mother and son's relationship.

Mitchell said he could remember police being called to the home on three occasions and the last time was at 3 a.m.

Guerrini said Nicholas Hulme also stole from her including cash, debit cards and even her car. He added Wendy Hulme was scared for her life and started sleeping at his house. He said her focus was getting Nicholas Hulme to stop using drugs.

"The kid was just awful," Guerrini said.

Eyewitness News has learned Wendy Hulme managed a local dentist's office.

It has been just 10 days since Dr. Alphonso Mack gave Wendy Hulme paid time off, so she could get her son, Nicholas, to a drug rehab center.

"She had a junkie in the house. Let's be quite frank," Mack said. And this junkie would take up her time, mind and thought."

Mack said all Wendy Hulme wanted was the best for her son and for him to stop abusing drugs. However, he said in pushing Nicholas Hulme to get treatment, it may have pushed him over the edge.

"I knew he was still using because she would follow him around," Mack said. "This is a mother that really loved her son."

While police spent hours going in and out of their apartment to collect evidence and document the scene, other neighbors said the relationship between the two was pretty rocky.

Neighbors agreed with Guerrini and said they suspected that Nicholas Hulme, whom they described as troubled, may have hurt his mother.

Mitchell said there were often loud altercations with Nicholas Hulme screaming and swearing at his mother.

"I'm like 'you got to be kidding me, this is your mom,'" said Daniel Martin, a neighbor who went to school with Nicholas Hulme. "[He] locked her in the car, wouldn't let her in, beating the crap out of the inside of the car."

Neighbors said Wendy Hulme was hard-working and quiet.

"Great kid, [I've] known him for years," Martin said. "I trust him with my life to a point, but he battled his own personal demons. We all do."

Guerrini said Wendy Hulme wants her to be remembered as a special soul and most importantly a great parent.

"She was definitely a mother who loved her son and was trying to do everything right for him," Guerrini said.
