The Pickens County Coroner's Office confirmed on Thursday that alcohol poisoning killed a Clemson University freshman who died in November.
Coroner Kandy Kelley said Tyler Karolczyk, 19, of Mt. Pleasant, died of alcohol intoxication, with a blood alcohol level of .267. That's more than three times the legal limit of .08 percent.
Karolczyk was pronounced dead at Oconee Memorial Hospital on Nov. 12.
Authorities said Karolczyk was found unresponsive by his roommates at an off-campus apartment, The Homes at Chimney Ridge on Smoke Rise Lane.
Karolczyk was a pre-business major from Mount Pleasant.
Kelley had previously suspected alcohol poisoning, but was waiting for test results to confirm the official cause of death.
In the weeks after his death, Clemson students, faculty and Karolczyk's own mother, participated in an on-campus rally organized to heighten the awareness and warn of the effects of alcohol abuse at the school.
