An Elkhart neighborhood and a family are shocked and saddened the man they knew was shot and killed inside his home on Sunday afternoon.
Police have spoken with neighbors living next door to Rahman Saleh, many of them telling detectives they saw two men running from the home.
An otherwise quiet house in a quiet neighborhood remains a crime scene.
"What led up to this? Was this a random burglary and something went wrong? Did somebody know he was a business owner and that's why they went there was to target him? That's something our detectives will have to look at as they go through their process," Sgt. Chris Snyder with the Elkhart police department said.
Medical examiners continue to search Rahman Saleh's home one day after the Elkhart business owner was shot and killed on Sunday afternoon. Neighbors say they saw two men run from the home after the shooting happened.
"We didn't find any evidence during that time. Our detectives kind of went door to door, just asking people what they saw," Sgt. Snyder said.
Neighbors say Saleh's wife was also home at the time of the deadly shooting. Investigators have spoken to her about what she saw. They say, fortunately, she was not hurt.
"She's going through a tough time. I can only imagine how traumatic it is to be there at the residence and find somebody like that. I can't imagine how traumatic that is," Sgt. Snyder said.
Elkhart detectives don't have suspect descriptions to release yet. They're asking anyone in the neighborhood who may have a clue to contact police.
"If they saw anything. Any unusual cars in that neighborhood at that time, to let us know so we can further our investigation and look into why he was killed," Sgt. Snyder said.
Saleh's family stood outside the home for most of the day while investigators searched the house.
The family however, did not wish to appear on camera.
Newscenter 16 reported on a double murder that happened at Saleh's Market on Middlebury Street in 2013.
Sgt. Snyder says so far, they don't have reason to believe the cases are linked.
The 2013 killings happened during an armed robbery at the market.
The two men convicted of the killings, Richard Gross and Kevin Moore, are both in prison, each serving over 100 year sentences.
Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Departments Homicide Unit at 574-295-7070 or the Homicide Tip Line at 574-389-4770.
