A North Central High School student was killed Saturday night in a single-vehicle crash on the north side.

Shortly after 9 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the intersection of Washington Boulevard and East 91st Street after a vehicle struck a tree.

Upon arrival, they found 16-year-old Alejandro Magdaleno Trujillo unresponsive and behind the wheel. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment.

Police believe that Trujillo was driving a 2001 Nissan west on East 91st Street at a high rate of speed as he approached the intersection.

"The victim likely did not see the approaching stop sign and likely locked up the vehicle's brakes in a frantic attempt to stop," said a statement from IMPD. "It is believed that the victim lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle began to slide into a tree. Investigators have determined that speed was a contributing factor to this unfortunate and tragic crash."
