Ventura County's stamp and coin collectors lost a good friend and supporter last month.

Richard "Dick" Kollar, who, with his wife, Gail, ran Kett's Koin Kastle, died Feb. 7. His death was one of two blows to the store, which was in the Wagon Wheel Junction area of Oxnard in a small shopping center that will be demolished because the property owners have major changes planned for the entire area. The businesses were supposed to be moved out by Feb. 29.

Dick and Gail had signed a lease for a new location in Ventura, next door to Ventura Hobbies, but the future of the business is unclear. I drove by both the new and old locations Tuesday and didn't see any indications of a move.

Dick's death notice was the bare minimum: "Richard Kollar 76, of Oxnard, business owner, died 2/7/2016. Arrangements by Reardon Funeral Home."

Dick supported the Ventura County Philatelic Society and the county coin club when it existed. He was always willing to order supplies for collectors, was active as an eBay seller and helped beginning collectors determine what supplies they should have. Customers could search through two large bins of stamps, one with U.S. stamps and the other with foreign stamps, and buy them for almost nothing.

He and I exchanged many thoughts about both hobbies' futures and other activities and shared an equal disdain for many politicians. He was an active bowler and accomplished cook and served in the Air Force. At least part of his service time - maybe all of it; I never asked - was at the Oxnard Air Force Base (now the Camarillo Airport).

I, and I'm sure many others, will miss him. My sympathy to his wife, daughter and son.
