Apparent drug overdoses took the lives of two men in their early 20's in Onslow County and now the mother of one of the men is speaking out about addiction and the dangers of heroin.

Matthew Eyster, 21, was taken off of life support on Wednesday after his mother, Cindy Patane, found him unconscious on the floor of his bedroom early Wednesday morning.

Now she is trying to help keep this from happening to others.

"There were some needles and things on the table and I just said, 'No Matthew, no Matthew, wake up Matthew, wake up Matthew, wake up, wake up' and I tried to turn him over, but he was very cold and I knew," she says, describing her horror of finding her son.

A grieving mother now only has memories of her son as a star athlete in high school and beloved friend to many.

"Watch your babies and don't think that just because you are a white, middle class involved parent that your kid is not doing this drug," she pleas to other parents.

Pantane says her son started using prescription pills after he graduated high school and eventually began using heroin, a drug his mother says he went to treatment for, but after returning home, he was unable to stay clean.

She says, "He was struggling with depression and they offered it to him and it's difficult for them once they use it to say no. He made a choice to start, he wanted to stop, but he couldn't."

Patane says her son is not alone in wanting to stop abusing drugs, but with the high costs of rehab and halfway houses, many are only able to stay the short amount of time that insurance pays.

"It takes more than 21 days to heal your body from an opiate addiction, it takes 10 years for your body to reconfigure itself after an opiate addiction," she says.

Patane started a gofundme site called Matthew's Gift and all of the money raised is going to help those going to rehab afford to stay longer than the 21 days that most insurances pay for and to help them also pay to stay at halfway houses after they leave rehab. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the other apparent overdose death of Jason Sapp, 21, who deputies believe also died from heroin.
