Investigators say an 18-year-old man died after a drive-by shooting in Newport News early Sunday morning.

The victim is Jalon R. Wright, according to Holly McPherson, a spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department.

Police responded to a call just before 2 a.m. in the 500 block of Turnberry Boulevard and found a man with a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he died about half an hour later, according to police.

The man's death marks Newport News' first homicide of 2016.

Investigators say the man had been at a gathering, and was standing in the backyard when someone drove by and shot at the house.

"This is always a quiet area," neighbor David Reid said. "It was always quiet since I've been here."

"One thing I loved about the area that kept me here was because it's always quiet. This was definitely a first," he added.

Sunday it looked like the night before had never happened. No sign of police tape or bullet holes.

"I still love the area, still love the area," Reid said shaking his head. "I just don't understand people."

Police have not named any suspects, or determined whether Wright was the intended target.

They ask anyone with information to call 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
