A 28-year-old Hammond woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash late Friday night in East Chicago.
Jade Hatfield, of the 4700 block of Columbia Avenue, was killed in the crash in the 3800 block of Michigan Street, Lake County coroner's office investigators said.
East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said the accident occurred at 10:40 p.m. Becker said Hatfield was behind the wheel when her vehicle struck a building and flipped upside down, coming to rest on its roof.
Becker said crash investigators believe speed was a factor in the accident. Hatfield was the lone occupant of her vehicle, he said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, coroner's office investigators said. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma suffered in a motor vehicle accident.
Hatfield was an employee of The Times Media Co., working as a press operator in the Munster office at 601 45th Ave. at the time of her death.
Hatfield joined The Times in October 2010. Facilities Operations Manager James Kmetz said Hatfield "started out in packaging and did very well." She was quickly promoted to press operator.
Kmetz described Hatfield as "quiet, polite, smart."
"The work Jade did in the pressroom literally touched every paper published," he said.
