A 20 year-old Chemainus man, Derek Descoteau, is dead and a 16 year-old Cowichan Valley girl remains in hospital with serious injuries, after an attack that occurred on Caswell Street in Chemainus Friday, May 20.

The accused, Colin John, appeared in court Tuesday and was formally charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. He was arrested at the scene, after police responded to a call at about 2 p.m.

"The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are continuing with their investigation into this tragic incident and extend their condolences to the families of the victims," said Cpl. Krista Hobday, media relations officer with the North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP detachment.

A Facebook group has been set up 'In loving memory of Derek'. "We lost an amazing friend, brother, son, uncle, bestfriend," it says, encouraging people to share their memories.
