A transgender woman was one of two people killed in a late-night shooting in Houston, friends and authorities said.

The shooting occurred late Sunday in midtown Houston, the shots ringing out along the street. Bars and restaurants are located a few blocks from the shooting scene.

Shante Thompson — a transgender woman — was killed in the shooting, along with a man named Willie Sims, relatives and friends told CBS affiliate KHOU. The victims may have been beaten with a crowbar or tire iron before they were killed, according to reports.

"It really hurts me because I have always looked out for Shante, been there for her and stuff," friend Kevin Braxton told KHOU. "When I got the call and saw her laying in the ground, it really hurt me in my heart."

It's unclear why the victims were targeted in the attack. No suspects were arrested in the hours after the shooting.
