State Police responding to a single vehicle crash in the Town of Mohawk Tuesday morning said the accident claimed the life of a teenager and sent another one to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police said neither teen was wearing a seat belt.

In a press statement, police said the accident occurred on Van Antwerp Road in the Town of Mohawk around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The driver, Kristen N. Barry, 18, of Fort Johnson, lost control of her 1996 Honda while negotiating a curve in the roadway, left the road and struck a large rock, police said. Barry suffered a compound leg fracture, complained of neck and body pain and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Her passenger, Nakiyta R. Passino, 18, of Johnstown, was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner and transported for later autopsy.

Police said members of the state police uniform patrol, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the crash scene and an investigation is ongoing. There have been no tickets or charges as part of the investigation at this time, they said.
