On Saturday November, 26th we lost our beautiful child, brother, spouse, nephew, cousin, grandson and friend, John Paul Klein. Johnny passed peacefully from this earth surrounded by his loving family. Johnny was a beacon of hope and love whose light shone brightly on this world. He was a beautiful baby, a loving child, an adventurous teenager, and a compassionate and gentle man. Thirty years is far too short a span on this earth, but we find comfort in knowing how many lives were positively influenced by Johnny's presence. We will be eternally grateful for the love of family, friends, and our beloved Bellingham community. John's 2.5-year journey with lymphoma highlighted his grace, strength, and determination. His team of doctors and nurses were incredible, and fought hard to cure him and to make him comfortable. At times, his path seemed unbearable, but we were lifted up by the love and support of all who knew him. Now free of cancer and suffering, Johnny is all around us: in the wind, the trees, the lakes, and in all of nature, which was a source of solace and strength for him. His family grieves deeply because he loved those around him so deeply. There will be years of tears but also laughter and joy as we remember his spontaneity, generosity, humor, kindness, and musicality. John was born and raised in Bellingham. He attended Carl Cozier Elementary, Kulshan Middle School, Sehome High School and Whatcom Community College. He made many friends and played many sports, becoming a top-ranked triathlete at 18. He attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, raced on the cycling team, and graduated with a degree in Environmental Politics. While in Walla Walla, he met his future husband, Tristan Rupert, bought a house, created beautiful gardens, worked hard in the wine and restaurant industries, and was beloved by his co-workers, clients, and many friends. After nine years in Walla Walla, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, which took him to Seattle for seven months and then back to Bellingham. John's return to Bellingham gave him a chance to spend more time with Katie, Mikey, Becky and Paul, despite the unfortunate circumstances of his return. This time was precious to his family and also allowed them to know the love of Tristan, who helped immensely with his knowledge, drive, and loving care. Johnny leaves behind a great number of family and friends. Those who knew Johnny remember his carefree and kind spirit, his hard work, his love of family, love of the outdoors, and love of music. His family hopes that you will carry on whatever part of his many wonderful qualities and values touched you most. A celebration of Johnny's life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11th at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal (355 Harris Ave) from 1 to 3 pm. The Kulshan Chorus will be performing in honor of Johnny Saturday, December 10th at Bellingham High School from 7 to 9pm. Johnny asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Kulshan Chorus, with which he joyfully sang and toured Croatia this past summer; or Northwest Youth Services, where he volunteered helping homeless LGBTQ youth.
