The man accused of killing Kaylee Sawyer first abducted and tried to sexually assault the 23-year-old woman, according to the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office.

Edwin Lara, a security officer at a Bend college, initially told investigators he accidentally hit and killed Sawyer while he was out on patrol late last month. The young woman's purse was found in a shed at Lara's home, along with bloody clothes.

"Mr. Lara had initially reported that he struck Kaylee with his car and that's what killed her. The evidence is contrary to that and shows he did not kill Kaylee with his car, but through assaulting her," Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said. "Lara never hit Kaylee with his car. He came upon her on campus, kidnapped her, attempted to sexually assault her and killed her."

Hummel told KATU News Lara's story changed during an interrogation with law enforcement. It was during that interrogation that Lara told officers where he had put Kaylee's body.

"We interrogated Mr. Lara law enforcement did and he gave information that is consistent with the current states theory of the case and Mr. Lara also told us where Kaylee's body was," Hummel said.

Sawyer's body was found off Highway 126 in Redmond. Her cause of death has been ruled blunt force trauma.

Lara was indicted on aggravated murder charges last Friday. Those charges could carry the maximum penalty of death, which Hummel is considering.

Lara will be extradited to Deschutes County in the next 1 to 3 weeks. He's also facing a slew of charges connected to a crime spree in Northern California.
