A Wichita teen has died following a skiing accident over the weekend in Colorado.

Tess Smith, a sophomore at Wichita Northwest High School, broke her leg in Breckenridge on Friday. She later became unresponsive.

An online fund for the teen's family has raised more than $14,200, surpassing a goal of $12,000.

"We absolutely do not want them to have to carry this burden on top of losing their precious daughter," the crater of the fund said at last update. "Please continue to share and donate as the amount that will be needed will continue to rise for medical costs, transportation for Tess and the beautiful services they will be having for her in the coming days. The Smith family sincerely thanks each and every one of you."

Tess' family chose for her to be an organ donor.

Counselors have been available to students and staff at the high school where Smith attended school and was on the junior varsity volleyball team last year.

"It's tragic. No one expects someone this young to leave us this early," said Assistant Principal Walter Givens, Jr.

Givens said this is the second tragic death of a student this academic year. In July, 17-year-old Dalton Houle died in a car crash coming back from Colorado.
