A Dillon man has been charged with murder in an early Saturday confrontation that turned fatal, Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a release.

The sheriff said 37-year-old Curran Jennings has been charged after a fatal shooting at a Whittaker Parkway location.

"This was just senseless," Ravenell said. "Two grown men couldn't work out any differences they may have had?"

The shooting victim was Michael Hartwell, 26, of Orangeburg, according to Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall.

Jennings made his first appearance in court on Monday where he was formally charged with murder.

Any bond consideration will have to be made later at the circuit court level.

Investigators have learned that around 12:20 a.m. Saturday, a confrontation between two men resulted in the fatal shooting.

Witnesses said Jennings saw a man approach his truck, which was parked across the street.

As the man drew closer to Jennings' truck, Jennings began walking in the direction of the truck and man.

Witnesses said they heard gunfire and turned to see a man lying on the ground.

Jennings is said to have left the area but investigators were able to talk to him via phone and later an interview.

Inv. Allen Culpepper is leading the ongoing investigation.
