Described by his brother as having a heart of gold, it was his heart that helped save the life of another.

Popular East Campbelltown Eagles player Wayde Dunley died after falling 15m from a cliff at Big Marley Beech, Bundeena, last weekend while on a fishing trip.

The 28-year-old was flown to St George Hospital in a critical condition but later died following severe brain damage.

He is survived by his wife Chelsea and seven-month-old daughter Koa. Shane Dunley said the family had made the decision to donate his brother's heart as a gesture that paid tribute to his character. "His heart was beating strong right up until the end," he said.

"Chelsea had previously had the conversation (with Wayde) and we felt it was right to donate his heart. "That was the sort of bloke he was, he had a heart of gold."

Shane said the outpouring of support from the community had helped comfort the family. "I hadn't realised just how many people he had touched in the community," he said.

Dunley captained the Eagles to their 2014 Sydney Shield premiership and followed up that success last year as part of the team that claimed the 2016 title. The Eagles are holding a fundraising night at Tabcorp Park at Menangle on Friday.
