Brian Harris always had a smile on his face.
Well known around the neighborhood he grew up in, the 49-year-old would always greet and joke around with anyone he ran into, said Pam Douglas, Harris' neighbor and friend. He shoved snow and took out trash for his neighbors without prompting.
"He wanted to bring the neighborhood together," Douglas said. "It's like he took care of the neighborhood ... Everyone loved him."
That all ended when Harris was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the northeast side of Indianapolis Friday night.
Police found him unresponsive on the street and pronounced him dead at the scene. Witnesses told police they saw a vehicle strike Harris as he was walking along Arlington Avenue. The car, which police suspect to be a tan/beige/gold colored 2007-2012 Nissan Sentra with front bumper and undercarriage damage, turned west on 38th Street after it hit Harris.
