Janet Lee Tomko, 58, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at home.

She was born in Reading to the late Richard T. Kiefer and Leah Lida (Needles) Zechman and was the wife of Joseph Thomas "Buddy" Tomko with whom she shared 34 years of marriage.

She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where she served on Parish Council, was a Religious Education Instructor and made and repaired Rosaries.

Janet was an OR technician and staff sonographer for WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. She had previously worked for Dr. Susan J. Probst, MD in West Reading for 23 years. She was co-founder of the hospital Prayer Shawl Program. Janet was also a member of the International Powerlifting Association (I.P.A.) and held 6 state titles, 3 world records, and tied 1 world record. She was a graduate of Cocalico High School Class of 1977 and attended Penn State University-Berks.

In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by a sister, Lynn, wife of Anthony Civitarese of Womelsdorf; a step-sister, Sherrie, wife of Robert Bulles of Blandon; a step-brother, Arthur Henry Zechman III of Vero Beach, FL; a nephew; 3 nieces; a great-niece; a great-nephew; a brother-in-law, Bernard Tomko of Zion Grove; a sister-in-law, Pamela Tomko of Zion Grove and her beloved cats and dog, Tucker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Arthur Henry Zechman Jr.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ephrata Cancer Center for the care Janet received during her illness.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2018, from 6 to 8 PM at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Avenue, Ephrata. An additional visitation will be held on Monday, April 23, 2018, at the funeral home, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 320 Church Avenue, Ephrata, with Rev. Father John J. McLoughlin, C.SS.R as celebrant. Final Commendation and Farewell will be private at the convenience of the family.
