Quinten Jan Bettles passed away of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on March 14, 2018, in Yelm, Wash. He was born on Jan. 30, 1952, to Joseph and Priscilla (Jackson) Bettles in Klamath Falls, Ore.
Quinten received an associate's of science in construction management from Klamath Community College, served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1971 to 1973), and owned/operated Coyote Rock Construction.
He married Lynne Matuk on Aug. 6, 2008, in Chiloquin, Ore., and was previously married to Maura Ochoa and Alyce Sam.
Quinten enjoyed training and riding horses, building, drumming and dancing as a traditional round bustle dancer. He was an activist in Native American affairs, especially on tribal water rights.
He is survived by his wife, Lynne Elizabeth Bettles of Yelm; sons, Michael (Pearl) Jim, Chris Arthur, Donovan, Joe, Cecil (Anna Marie), Sean and Eric (Elissa); daughter, Wainanwit "Nanny" Schroeder (Ronald); 14 grandchildren; brothers, Terrance, Robert and Gordon Bettles; and sister, Josephine "Josie" Tofoya.
He was predeceased by grandparents, Joseph Bettles Sr. and Hanna Kash Kash and Albert Jackson and Sylvia Wainanwit; sister, Jody; brothers, Amory, Cecil and Michael; sons, Mangus, Ian and Michael; and daughter, Norah.
Services will be held on March 16, 2018, at 6 p.m. in Hehe Long House, Warm Springs, Ore., followed by a service on March 17, 2018, at 9 a.m. in Goos-oLgi-gowa Center at the corner of Highway 62 and South Chiloquin Road, Chiloquin. Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association.
