Grieving friends and family of murdered Phillip Island psychologist and mother-of-three Samantha Fraser are uniting to take a stand against domestic violence, as a murder investigation continues into her death last week.
A peaceful memorial vigil was held on Saturday night in Cowes to remember Ms Fraser, 38, with her devastated father Trevor Fraser thanking the close-knit Phillip Island community for its support and recalling his daughter as a remarkable woman, mother and daughter.
Ms Fraser separated from her husband Adrian Basham two years ago, and had deep fears for her own safety and that of her primary school-aged children in the months leading to her death.
She had changed her house locks and sought protection from her former husband after several alleged assaults, with her parents moving into her house to ensure the family's safety
Mr Basham, 41, interviewed by homicide squad detectives last week and released pending further inquiries, is scheduled to appear in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court in Morwell tomorrow in relation to nine counts of alleged assault against Ms Fraser last year.
But it is not clear if the committal hearing against Mr Basham, a fly-in-fly-out gas worker in WA, will proceed, since last week's death of Ms Fraser leaves the charges without a live victim.
Police may be forced to drop or not proceed with the prosecution, or ask for the matter to be adjourned.
Trevor Fraser appealed on Saturday for the help of the Phillip Island community in bringing his daughter's killer to justice.
He and his wife Janine, believed to have moved from Swan Hill to live with their daughter and her children, were away for a week visiting their son in New York when Samantha was found dead in her garage after failing to pick her children up from the local Cowes primary school.
He described the family as gutted by her tragic death.
