MONTROSE, Ga. -- Investigators are trying to find answers after a Laurens County man reportedly shot and killed his own grandson during an argument Sunday.

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office says 65-year-old Ervin Blash is in jail, charged with the murder of 28-year-old Charles Christopher Patterson.

Deputies said Montrose is a quaint town that takes up only one square mile, but this weekend it became the scene of an alleged homicide that investigators are now piecing together.

"Nice and quiet. Nothing ever goes sideways here. It's just a great place to live," said Lt. Gerald Frazier with the Laurens County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were reportedly called to a home in the 1600 block of Railroad St. in Montrose around 3:45 p.m. Sunday about a domestic argument.

"It became heated and it spilled out from the house into the yard," Frazier said.

Frazier said these kinds of incidents aren't normal for Montrose.

"It's out of the ordinary, but generally in a homicide they're closely related," he said.

Local business owner Trey Cottle said the community will need to do some healing after this shooting.

"I know they're good people, and it's tragic," said Cottle.

Cottle said law enforcement will do their best to bring peace to their town.

"I have great confidence in the Laurens County Sheriff's Department and the investigators there to pull this together and to help us get closure and answers," he said.

The investigation is still pending and other charges could follow for Blash. At this point, investigators haven't said what the argument was about.
