A woman was fatally shot Saturday in her east Athens home in what police said was the first murder this year in Athens.

Latisha Gresham, 36, was fatally shot by her boyfriend during an argument in their home at 247 Moreland Ave., according to Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Geof Gilland.

A male resident called 911 after he returned home from work at about 8:20 a.m. and found Gresham lying unresponsive in a hallway.

The county coroner pronounced Gresham dead of a gunshot wound at the scene.

The woman's boyfriend, 40-year-old Marion Adkins Jr., who remained on the scene, admitted to shooting Gresham, according to Gilland.

"The suspect said they were involved in an argument when the weapon he has holding discharged," Gilland said. "A subsequent investigation by ACCPD led detectives to charge Adkins with the murder of Gresham."

Adkins was being detained without bail Sunday at the Clarke County Jail.
