Coosada Police Chief Leon Smith, Jr., has identified a man shot during a domestic incident Jan. 27 as Todd Oiler, 43, with a last known address as Andalusia. He was previously a Millbrook resident.
Smith said the shooting is still under investigation, and evidence will be presented to an Elmore County Grand Jury in the coming months to see if charges are warranted. This is standard procedure in any homicide investigation, Smith said.
The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is also assisting Coosada Police with their investigation.
Just before 7 a.m. Jan. 27 Oiler reportedly arrived at his estranged wife's house on Kennedy Avenue, officials said. He reportedly tried to gain entry into the home, then went back to his vehicle which was parked outside. His estranged wife told him he needed to leave but opened the door to speak with him. He reportedly pushed her down and entered the home, confronting a male subject that was in the house. A fight began between the two men at which point Oiler was shot, and died at the scene.
Young children who were also in the house sleeping, were not injured and did not witness the shooting, we were told.
Police are not releasing the identity of the shooter, as there are no criminal charges against him at this time. Again, the case will be presented to the Elmore County Grand Jury at a later date, at which time they will decide if the incident merits charges or if the shooter acted in self defense.
Oiler's body was taken to the Alabama State Crime Lab for autopsy and it will be determined if alcohol and/or drugs were in his system at the time.
There is a history of domestic issues between Oiler and his estranged wife. Millbrook Police were called to another residence last year when Oiler tried to gain access to a home where his estranged wife was living after their separation. Oiler reportedly fought with officers and was arrested at that time.
This marks the fifth domestic violence related death in Elmore/Autauga counties within the past year.
In all four of the other incidents, estranged or former husbands/boyfriends killed their estranged/former wives and girlfriends. In a case out of Wetumpka in July of last year, a father shot and killed his estranged wife and a daughter. Two other daughters were also shot but survived. The husband/father than set the house on fire and killed himself.
In Tallassee last year an estranged husband tracked down his wife and mother-in-law in the Walmart parking lot, ramming their vehicle with his truck, and then shooting them both before killing himself.
In Prattville last year a former husband entered a home shooting and killing his former wife, which caused a massive manhunt when he left the scene. He was later found deceased in his vehicle in Autauga County, dead off a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Another case in Wetumpka last year involved a man who stabbed his girlfriend to death at an apartment complex before fleeing the scene. He was later captured and arrested.
