A 35-year-old Bay Area woman died Friday after losing her footing and plunging over the edge of Eagle Falls near Lake Tahoe, officials with the North Tahoe fire department and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said.

Rescue crews recovered the body of Stephanie Espinosa by the waterfall near Emerald Bay, according to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District.

Espinosa entered the waterfall area just off Highway 89, where there is a roughly 150-foot drop to the rocky terrain and fast-moving water, said Erin Holland, a fire district spokeswoman. She was taken over the falls as she reached for a tree branch.

"She was just too close to the edge" when she slipped at around 3 p.m., Holland said. "We had such a wet winter with record snow, so the water is so, so powerful and it is so, so cold."

Espinosa's brother, Nick Martinez, said she wasn't taking any photos prior to her death. In an interview with ABC News, Martinez said she had been hiking with a girlfriend when she lost her footing.

She leaves behind three children, according to a gofundme campaign established in her memory.
