A 24-year-old from Athens was fatally shot in Savannah this week in an apparent murder-suicide.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said Jessica Schanae Nowell was found dead from a gunshot wound in her home on West Montgomery Crossroad in Savannah at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

About 12 hours earlier, officers said they responded to a report of a man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about 5 miles away on North Parkwood Drive.

Justin Baldwin, 24, was taken to Memorial Medical Center where died on Thursday, according to police. Authorities have not yet released a possible motive for the shooting, nor said what relationship existed between Nowell and Baldwin.

However, Nowell's survivors have asked that memorial contributions be made to an Athens-area domestic abuse agency.

According to Nowell's obituary and Facebook page, she graduated from Clarke Central High School in 2008, then from Savannah State University this year.

While in college, she joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve and served as an airman first-class with the Security Forces Unit at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta.

Funeral services will be held noon today at Timothy Baptist Church, to be followed by interment at Evergreen Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jessica Nowell can be made to Project Safe, P.O. Box. 7532, Athens, GA 30604.
